2021 FedCSIS Conference Series Summary

The 16th Conference on Computer Science and Intelligence Systems, FedCSIS 2021 has just ended. Our QED Software Team had an opportunity to present their achievements in several moments.

This year the span of topics presented was especially wide – from classic machine learning, through deep learning, biblical text analysis, to medicine and games.

There were countless examples of AI and IT applications in various fields conferred, often showcasing the amazing cooperation on the brim of academia and industry, as well topic known to QED Software and in line with our mission of transforming artificial intelligence research into innovative products with multiple applications across a vast variety of industries.

Once again, the Professor Zdzisław Pawlak Awards have been granted to scientists from all over the world. This year’s winners are:

  • Best Paper — the best out of all papers accepted to the conference — Anh Nguyen Mac, Hung Son Nguyen Rotation Variance in Graph Convolutional Networks (award co-sponsored by QED Software)
  • Young Researcher – the best out of papers whereby all authors are younger than 40 years — Christian Leyh, Konstanze Köppel, Sarah Neuschl, Milan Pentrack Critical Success Factors for Digitalization Projects (award sponsored by QED Software)
  • Industry Cooperation – the best out of papers whereby there are at least two different authors, one working in academia and another one in industry — Lov Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, Lalita Bhanu Murthy, Sanjay Misra, Vipul Kocher, Srinivas Padmanabhuni An Empirical Study on Application of Word Embedding Techniques for Prediction of Software Defect Severity Level (award sponsored by QED Software)
  • International Cooperation — the best out of papers whereby there are at least two different authors working in institutions located in two different countries — Arman Ferdowsi, Alireza Khanteymoori Discovering Communities in Networks: A Linear Programming Approach Using Max-Min Modularity (award co-sponsored by QED Software)

Congratulations to the winners!

The conference was also an opportunity to share the results of our own research happening during various R&D projects, as well as research of individual members of our team. FedCSIS is always an important forum to exchange ideas.

Our team presented during the AAIA sessions with two papers:

  • A Practical Solution to Handling Randomness and Imperfect Information in Monte Carlo Tree Search — Maciej Świechowski and Tomasz Tajmajer
  • An impact of tensor-based data compression methods on the training and prediction accuracy of the popular deep convolutional neural network architectures — Jakub Grabek and Boguslaw Cyganek

Among other lectures, there were also references to the current pandemic situation:

The plenary lecture by prof. Moshe Y Vardi [“Lessons from COVID-19: Efficiency vs Resilience”, ed. incl.], who drew attention to the need to take into account aspects other than efficiency in our work and activities. According to the professor’s position, many catastrophes, errors and tragedies could be avoided by increasing the priority for aspects such as security or stability — says Maciej Świechowski, VP of Research at QED Software.

Although we have been appearing at the FedCSIS Conference for years, this year our cooperation is also tightening on the substantive level. Dominik Ślęzak, CEO at QED Software, joined the group of the main conference series organizers, supporting them with his scientific experience.
We are have also just become the Conference Strategic Partner, which we couldn’t be more proud of.

This was a second FedCSIS happening fully remote. What was somehow special about it was the insight into the homes of people from various cultures. An unplanned, yet very interesting addition to the event. However, we enjoyed the online version of the conference, we are impatiently awaiting (hopefully) a stationary event in Sofia, Bulgaria, next year.
